  • User Surveys can gather quantitative and qualitative data directly from users, providing valuable insights into preferences, pain points, and expectations. These give us a comprehensive understanding of a large user base, informing design decisions that cater to diverse user needs.
  • User Interviews involve direct conversations with users to delve deep into their experiences, motivations, and pain points. The responses provide us with rich qualitative insights, uncovering nuanced aspects of user behavior that quantitative data might miss.
  • Contextual Analysis involves observing users in their natural environment, shedding light on real-world interactions and challenges. By understanding users' behaviors within their context, we gain insights that lead to contextually relevant design solutions.

STEP 4

Empathize

Our fourth step is a step into the shoes of our users. Gaining insight about their needs, emotions, and aspirations helps us to lay the groundwork for creating truly user-centric design solutions.

A graphic of designers taking a closer look at several personas
  • Persona Development involves crafting detailed user personas that represent distinct user archetypes, each with unique traits, needs, and goals. These provide a clear reference for design decisions, ensuring that solutions resonate with real user motivations.
  • User Journey Maps visually depict the end-to-end user experience as it is currently, highlighting touchpoints, emotions, and pain points. These maps offer a holistic view of user interactions, helping us identify opportunities for enhancing the user journey.

STEP 5

Define the Problem

In this pivotal phase, we synthesize the insights gained from the preceding research and analysis processes to identify the core issues our designs aim to solve.

  • Problem Statements are plainly put pronouncements about the top issues we've discovered. They serve as the guiding light and direct our design efforts towards addressing users' top-priority needs.
STAGE 2

ideation & design

Welcome to our ideation & design phase, filled with all the activities that you most likely associate UX design with. This is where we use our research to conceptualize solutions and craft interactive prototypes. Our goal here is to merge creativity with functionality, aligning design concepts with your expectations and creating a seamless bridge between abstract vision and concrete user experiences.

STEP 6

Information Architecture

In this step we shape the foundational structure of our product, creating a blueprint detailing where we will house all information and actions .

A graphic showing a designer constructing a site navigation, beginning at the home page
  • A Sitemap outlines the hierarchical structure of the project, providing a visual guide to navigation paths and content organization. This map ensure logical navigation, helping users find information effortlessly.
  • Content Mapping identifies and categorizes content elements, ensuring that information is logically organized and easy to access. Doing this properly enhances user understanding and interaction with the product.
  • Template Allocation involves planning and designating wireframe layouts to different sections of the project. This step streamlines design consistency and avoids rework by maximizing the use of each template across multiple site pages. Work smarter, not harder!

STEP 7

Interactive Product Considerations

*For interactive products like games or live experiences -we might also include processes to ensure seamless user interactions and an engaging progression through different stages.

Graphic of designers creating a flow chart
  • Technical Specifications lay the groundwork for the interactive experience, outlining the functionality, performance, and technical requirements. These specifications provide a clear blueprint for development, ensuring a cohesive and effective execution.
  • Flow Charts visually map out the user journey within the interactive experience, illustrating the progression through different stages and decision points. These charts enhance our understanding of the user's path and guide development, resulting in a well-structured and intuitive experience.
  • Level Maps are low-detail visuals that display the spatial layout and challenges within interactive games, defining the stages users navigate through. These maps ensure a balanced and engaging progression, keeping users motivated and immersed in the experience.

STEP 8

UI Design

Here's where we take our ideas and turn them into concrete design elements, creating the building blocks for a user interface that is both intuitive and captivating.

  • Wireframes outline the layout and structure of key pages with minimal visual detail, focusing on content placement and functionality. Low or mid-fidelity wireframes provide a clear design skeleton, allowing stakeholders to focus on the core structure without getting to deep into the visual details.
  • A Component Design Library catalogs all interface elements, ensuring consistency and efficiency throughout the design process. Using the same principle as our Template Allocation, this library streamlines design and development by providing a standardized set of components to be reused and iterated upon across the project.

STEP 9

Prototyping

This is a fun one! On this step we get to bring our design concepts to life through an interactive simulation.

Designers work on creating a detailed and stylized prototype
  • Interactive Prototypes are detailed mock-ups that allow us to test the user experience, interactions, and flows in a realistic context. By navigating through a prototype, stakeholders and users alike gain a tangible preview of the final product, facilitating iterative improvements and refinements.
STAGE 3

validation & iteration

Now it's time to validate our designs! (or iterate on them until we can). Here is where we take the crucial step of testing and refining our design solutions to make them perfect for our users. This is an exciting phase where we continuously assess and improve our solutions, ultimately creating the best possible product for our users.

STEP 10

Usability Testing

Putting our design solutions into the hands of real users is the best way to assess their effectiveness.

  • Usability Tests  are administered by observing users as they engage with interactive prototypes (and later on, even live products). Through these observations we can gauge user interactions, navigation, and overall satisfaction and uncover improvement opportunities.

STEP 11

Refinement

Here is where we make some late improvements to our design after carefully analyzing user feedback and observations.

Designers iterate on their designs as they evolve into a more user-friendly product
  • Iterative Refinements are made to ensure that we create a final product that seamlessly resonates with user expectations. Utilizing the insights we gathered from usability testing, we make precise adjustments to our interface elements, interactions, and flows iterative approach ensures that our design solutions become increasingly user-friendly and engaging, exceeding user expectations.
STAGE 4

deployment

Welcome to the culmination of our design journey! Here we focus on bringing our carefully crafted design solutions to life and ensuring that they perform seamlessly across different devices and scenarios.

STEP 12

Handoff Documentation

This is one small step for teamwork, one giant leap for the product! Here we solidify the technical and design foundations that underpin our design solutions by establishing the guidelines and blueprints that drive our solutions' implementation and ensure visual and functional harmony.

  • A Design System establishes a cohesive set of design principles, styles, and components that maintain consistency across the user interface. This documentation enhances efficiency, reduces design discrepancies, and enables seamless collaboration by providing a shared visual and functional vocabulary.
  • Functional Specifications define the technical requirements and functionalities of the design, ensuring clear communication between designers and developers. These annotations act as a manual for developers, helping to streamline implementation and reduce misinterpretations which leads to a more accurate realization of the design vision.

STEP 13

Implementation & QA

This is where our designs truly come to life! We work hand in hand with visual designers and developers to transform design assets into a functional user interface that works seamlessly across different platforms.

  • Quality Assurance is conducted to test every aspect of the final product, ensuring that it aligns with the design intent and provides users with a high-quality experience. By doing this, we pave the way for a smooth launch.
